This is a video lecture in a course on the philosophy of language. It summarizes Gareth Evans's theory of proper names that he puts forward in a famous 1973 paper titled "The Causal Theory of Names." Evans died of cancer at the age of 34. This paper is his most famous philosophical contribution, and, in my opinion, it settled the debate in the philosophy of language about the functioning of proper names. Evans pointed out the problems with John Searle's Descriptivist theory of proper names and with Saul Kripke's causal theory of proper names from Naming and Necessity. In brief, Evans thought that a name refers to the dominant causal source of the cluster of descriptions associated with a name. This video lecture explains Evans's famous Madagascar example, and all of the other important points in the paper. I also realize that the Napoleon example from Evans's 50-year-old philosophy paper is the plot of the hit AMC television show Mad Men, starring Jon Hamm as Don Draper.
