Here’s the problem: Pain medication is given to treat pain so someone can calm down.Not after they prove they deserve it. The medication becomes leverage. Be quiet. Be compliant. Control your emotions. If you’re a good little girl then maybe you get relief. When her husband advocates for her, the nurse calls her “hysterical” — a word rooted in the Greek hystera, meaning uterus, and historically used to dismiss women instead of treating their symptoms. And notice something else. This isn’t a man dismissing a woman. This is a woman dismissing another woman. We can miss that the bias is so culturally ingrained that it’s not one sex imposing it on the other. We’ve ALL been trained inside the same system that teaches us women’s pain is emotional and exaggerated. This is medical gaslighting. Pain gets reframed as a behavior problem instead of a medical need. And this isn’t rare. Just look at the data. Women wait longer for pain medication in ERs than men. Our pain is rated lower by medical staff even when we report the same severity. We’re more likely to be told it’s stress, anxiety, or psychological.
